Mike Gibbons - Club Chairman & Founder of

City of Hull Boxing Club

Our Story...

Founded on 18th November 2008 by former amateur boxer Mike Gibbons, who is still active with the club today. The club was founded in the disused former home of the Humberside Police Boys club, based on Garden Village, namely the Elm Tree Avenue.

The club was made up of a small handful of volunteers and believe it or not 2 boxers, Liam (8) and Ryan (11) both sons of Mike. The vision Mike had was to develop a championship winning amateur boxing club and give a safe space for youngsters to come and learn the noble art as well as develop their life skills. Soon the gym started to fill with young, keen boxers that shared that vision. The club was a long way off from hosting its first show but with the numbers growing you knew it wouldn't be long.

With numbers growing, and plenty of backers the club was going from strength to strength.

Some boxers transferred from other gyms and followed Mike over. In their 2008-09 Season the club finally made its appearance in competition, 8 bouts in all sadly not the greatest start winning only 1 in those 8 bouts. The 2009-10 Season though, things would be much different. With more boxers medicalled and those existing developing their skills the club was fast developing a very strong boxings stable.

Mike was accompanied by more coaches, Andy Ali, Steve Marshall, Danny Thompson, Arnie and of course Mikes former coach Alex Begbie (formerly Head Coach at Kinloss ABC), some of these coaches left due to work commitments and a new addition to the coaching team was a young Bob Beautyman who was a qualified PT and Nutritionist, this gave a new angle to the club as we could now educate our young prospects on a healthy balanced diet and adding a little sports science into our operation.

This was the season the club lifted its first National title with Charlie Payton winning the Senior Class A Novice championships at the Featherweight Division. We hosted our first show 29th January 2010, the club matched 16 bouts with all 16 going making it one of the best nights in the clubs history so far.

In 2010 the club moved to its new location of First Avenue, North Hull Estate, the costs of their Garden Village home become unsustainable the Garden Village trustees were wanting more more money above and beyond what they had agreed with the club, so a new home in the North Hull was the start of a new beginning for the club. The coaches were re-inforced with the signing of Dave Kinsley and Paul Dolan (Current Head Coach), but soon the club outgrew this much smaller facility and they eventually moved to its current home on Orchard Park, thanks to funding from Sport England and Hull City Council who between them was able to fund the empty former Customer Service Centre on Orchard Park Road to the tune of £359,000.00.

Since its founding the club has had 7 National Championship wins, several National Finals, many Yorkshire Regional champions, 4 Yorkshire Belt Holders, an English Belt winner and a Haringey Gold Medalist, around 7 former amateurs have turned professional with many more looking for the same route. With a few coaches that have left, many of the original coaches still remain Mike Gibbons, Bob Beautyman, Dave Kinsley and of course last but no means least Paul Dolan.

In 2016, Mike chose to step down as Head Coach and Matchmaker due to health reasons and he handed the mantel over to Paul Dolan who has since managed the amateur boxing squad very well with the support of his coaching staff and team at the club, Mike is still active at the club and due to improved health is starting to do more. The Club however has never slowed down and remains as one of the most desired clubs in the city.
